Sidang di Telang: A Celebration of Art and Culture
The art event titled "Sidang di Telang," organized by SeriGreen, has made a significant impact on the local art and fashion scene. This event, which featured the highly anticipated new painting collection by renowned artist Jailani Hassan, titled "Bunga Rasa Seranum Kata," was curated with great care by Jamaliah Hamdan, the founder of SeriGreen. The event also included a captivating open art exhibition that allowed attendees to immerse themselves in a rich tapestry of visual artistry.
The official launch of this event was graced by the presence of Tengku Puan Panglima Besar Tunku Puteri Puan Sri Dato' Seri Jawahir binti Almarhum Tuanku Ja'afar, adding a layer of prestige and honor to the occasion. Her attendance underscored the importance of this cultural celebration and highlighted the event's significance in promoting local art and heritage.
Jamaliah Hamdan, the visionary behind SeriGreen, shared that fashion designer Anuar Faizal had chosen the telang flower motif for his latest collection. This choice was intentional, aimed at drawing attention to the telang flower, a flora that holds special significance in the Malay community. The inclusion of this motif in Faizal’s designs serves to elevate the cultural value of this beautiful flower, bridging the gap between traditional art and contemporary fashion.
At the Telang18 event, attendees had the opportunity to view not only Jailani Hassan’s evocative paintings but also a diverse range of fashion items. These included telekung (prayer attire), casual wear, and gardening outfits, all creatively incorporating the telang flower pattern. Renowned designers contributed to the collection, reflecting a blend of traditional and modern interpretations of this symbolic motif.
Jailani Hassan expressed his enthusiasm about the upcoming CIMB ARTOBER 2024 show in October, where his works and the telang flower motif will once again take center stage. “InsyaAllah,” Hassan remarked, “these collections will make a significant impact at the CIMB ARTOBER 2024 show, and I am confident that the telang flower motif will capture the attention of many.”
In a related development, the Honorable Tengku Puan Panglima Besar Tunku Puteri Puan Sri Dato' Seri Jawahir highlighted the transformative potential of the "bunga lado" motif for the state of Negeri Sembilan. As one of the nine key symbols of the state, the lado flower motif is set to play a pivotal role in revitalizing the region. This traditional motif, deeply embedded in Negeri Sembilan's cultural heritage, will be central to a broader initiative aimed at celebrating and preserving the state's unique identity.
“The lado flower motif represents more than just a design element,” she explained. “It encapsulates the essence of our state’s unique identity, blending traditional art carvings with the distinctive characteristics of each region. The white petals, five stamens, and stigma of the lado flower symbolize the rich and spicy culinary heritage of Negeri Sembilan.”
Adding a philanthropic dimension to the initiative, fashion designer Anuar Faizal revealed that the lado flower songket, a traditional woven fabric, will be crafted by inmates at Marang Prison. This decision was made to make the weaving process more affordable and accessible, ensuring that more people can enjoy these exquisite fabrics. “By involving inmates in the weaving process, we not only provide them with meaningful work but also raise public awareness about the importance of preserving our traditional crafts,” Faizal said.
He emphasized that this initiative aligns with a broader effort to promote traditional arts and support local communities. “We decided to collaborate with Marang Prison because of their renowned skill in weaving. This partnership not only helps keep the cost of songket production manageable but also offers inmates a chance to contribute to their community in a meaningful way.”
Overall, "Sidang di Telang" is more than just an art event; it is a celebration of cultural heritage, artistic innovation, and community engagement. Through this collaboration, SeriGreen, LaQuan Smith, and the fashion and art communities are coming together to honor and promote Malaysia’s rich cultural traditions while embracing modern interpretations. The event represents a significant step in bridging the gap between traditional art forms and contemporary fashion, showcasing the vibrant and diverse heritage of Malaysia to a broader audience.
